
A drip edge is a strip of bent metal along the edge of your roof deck, under the shingles, and its entire job is to stop water curling back onto the wood.
Water does not leave a roof in a tidy arc. Surface tension holds it to whatever it is touching, so runoff reaching the last inch of shingle wraps around the underside and runs down the fascia — the board your gutter is screwed to, on the face nobody looks at.
The drip edge interrupts that with a metal lip water has to let go of. Cheapest metal on a roof, and one of the most frequently missing.
What it does, and why the two edges are different problems
At the eave — the bottom edge, where the gutter hangs — it carries runoff past the fascia and into the trough. Without it, water tracks behind the gutter and soaks the back face of the board.
At the rake — the sloped edge up a gable end — there is no gutter and little runoff. The threat is wind-driven rain pushed sideways under the shingle overhang into the edge of the deck. The metal closes that gap and gives the shingle edge something rigid to sit on so it does not curl.
The trade definition is a flashing with an outward-projecting lower edge intended to control the direction of dripping water. None of this is waterproofing. It is aim.
Types of drip edge: C, D and F

The eave decision is C versus D, and it turns on about an inch of bent metal. Type C ends in a plain vertical leg, and water reaching the bottom of that leg has a fair chance of curling back around it onto the fascia — the precise failure the part exists to prevent. Type D adds a kick: the bottom turns outward and throws the water clear. InspectAPedia is blunt that the L profile is rarely as effective at directing water off the fascia of a sloped roof, and cites the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association's preference for the T on the same reasoning.
Both are legal. The code names no profile, so a supplier page telling you Type D is "required at eaves" is selling rather than citing. The upcharge is trivial.
The hem, and why it is worth looking at
A hemmed edge is metal folded back on itself a half-turn, so what is exposed is a rounded fold rather than a raw sheared cut. It stiffens the leg, keeping a ten-foot length straight between fasteners, and gives water a defined break point.
Unhemmed is cheaper, softer, and on steel it is where corrosion starts, because a sheared edge is the one place the galvanizing never was. It breaks no rule. It is the difference between a part still working in year twenty and a wavy brown line above your gutter.
What the code says, quoted
This is code. Drip edge became a requirement for asphalt shingle roofs in the 2012 IRC, at R905.2.8.5. ICC's own Significant Changes to the 2012 IRC reprints the section and says outright that it "was not previously required for the installation of asphalt shingles unless it was part of the roofing manufacturer's installation instructions." codes.iccsafe.org returns a 403, so we read that ICC-authored excerpt as hosted by Walterboro, South Carolina.

Plus one sentence that decides more than all four combined: "Underlayment shall be installed over the drip edge along eaves and under the drip edge on gables."
One note on the wording. The 2012 text says gables, not rakes — ICC's commentary translates it, noting the sloped edges are "referred to as 'gables' in the code text" — and later editions say rake edges. Fasteners are the ones in R905.2.5, the shingle nails.
Trade practice, not code. Profile choice, hemmed edges, a four-inch end lap rather than the code minimum of two, offsetting laps from the joints below: sheet-metal convention, useful but not code numbers. Your jurisdiction adopts an edition on its own schedule and then amends it, so the inspector is the authority here.
Over at the eaves, under at the rakes
This is the detail that separates a working drip edge from a decorative one, and it reverses halfway around the roof.
Eave: metal first, underlayment lapped over it. Anything getting past the shingles runs on top of the underlayment, and that drainage plane has to hand its water to the metal and out. Underlayment stopping short with metal on top turns the eave into a dead end that drips onto the deck edge.
Rake: underlayment first, metal over it. No runoff arrives from above. The threat is sideways, and metal on top leaves the wind no lifted edge to get under.
Roofs get this backwards constantly, usually by rolling the ice-and-water membrane out to the deck edge first and nailing the eave drip edge on top of it — the order the materials come off the truck. It looks identical from the ground.
Overlap direction is the same idea, smaller. Where two lengths meet, the upper piece laps over the lower in the direction the water is going: along the eave, toward the downspout; up the rake, the higher piece over the one below. Two inches minimum. A lap run the wrong way is a scoop.
Drip edge, gutter apron, and the gap between them
Standard drip edge ends in a short leg outside the fascia. If the gutter settled, was hung low, or the fascia is thicker than the installer assumed, that leg can end up behind the back of the trough, and water leaving the metal falls behind the gutter. The original failure, reintroduced by geometry, on a roof that has a drip edge.
A gutter apron is the long-legged answer: an extended flange reaching over the gutter's back edge and dropping water inside it, often sold as a Type F. On a house with gutters it is usually the right part at the eave, and the cost for gutter installation breakdown prices it as the cheapest line on a gutter bid and the one most often left off.
The pre-2012 problem you can diagnose from the driveway
Here is the useful consequence of a code date. Drip edge was not required before the 2012 IRC, and jurisdictions adopt editions late. A roof laid in 2004, or 1998, or 1976 and never fully replaced since plausibly has none anywhere on it, and nobody did anything wrong. It was legal when it went on.
The symptom is not a leak. It is the fascia, and it shows from the ground.
- A dark stripe down the fascia behind the gutter, often fully visible only once the gutter comes off.
- Paint peeling in a band along the top of the fascia, where water has been arriving from behind.
- Gutter fixings letting go. A gutter pulling away at one end is usually soft wood, not a gutter problem.
- No metal at the shingle edge. Stand under the eave and look up where the shingles stop. Raw plywood edge, or shingle overhanging into space with nothing behind it, means there is nothing there.
One of the few roof questions a homeowner can settle alone. If the rot has reached the panel above your head, that is the soffit and fascia assembly, a different repair.
Retrofit is real at the rakes, where the shingle edge lifts. At the eaves it means loosening the first course and dropping the gutters, so labor is most of the cost. Under about five years of roof left, put it in the replacement scope instead — drip edge is one of those flashing details that only appears on a contract if you write it there.
If a claim is paying for the roof in California
Drip edge has an insurance flavor, straight out of that code date. Where a pre-2012 roof is replaced under a storm claim, the drip edge is a code upgrade — work current code requires that was not on the roof being replaced. Carriers handle those separately from the like-for-like scope, and whether yours is paid turns on the ordinance-or-law provision in your own policy. It is a small line, left off adjuster scopes routinely, and adding it later is a supplement rather than an argument. Which makes the deadlines worth knowing.
California ties every cancellation window to the day you sign, not to what your insurer decides - so a denial three weeks later leaves you with no statutory way out.
